John Diebold began promoting the use of automated machines such as the computer in the 1950s. In his book, Automation (1952), he proposed and described how computers could improve day-to-day operations in business and government. In 1954, he founded the Diebold Group, a management and consulting firm that provided services to dozens of U.S. corporations and state and federal agencies.
